Return/Refund Policy

At The Written Haus, we take pride in crafting quality stationery and leather goods by hand. We want you to love your purchase, but we also want you to understand the unique nature of handcrafted items before you order.

Understanding Handcrafted Products

Important: All our leather journal covers and select other items are handcrafted. This means:

Natural Leather Variations

Genuine leather is a natural material with inherent characteristics that cannot be controlled or eliminated:

  • Natural markings: Scars, wrinkles, grain variations, and subtle color differences

  • Texture variations: Areas of different smoothness or grain patterns

  • Color inconsistencies: Slight variations in dye absorption and natural tones

  • Surface marks: Small blemishes, pores, or natural imperfections

  • Patina development: Leather darkens and develops character with use

These are NOT defects. These characteristics prove your item is made from genuine, quality leather and give each piece its unique character.

Handcrafted Sizing

Unlike machine-cut products, handcrafted items may have minor sizing variations:

  • Measurements may vary by 2-3mm from listed specifications

  • Edges may not be perfectly uniform

  • Hand-stitching may show slight irregularities

  • Thickness may vary slightly across the item

These variations are normal and expected in artisanal, handmade products.

What This Means for You

By purchasing our handcrafted products, you acknowledge and accept that:

  • No two items will be identical

  • Your item may look slightly different from product photos

  • Natural leather characteristics are not grounds for return or refund

  • Minor sizing variations are not grounds for return or refund

Our No-Refund Policy

Due to the handcrafted and personalized nature of our products, we do not offer refunds or returns on completed orders.

This policy exists because:

  • Each item is made specifically for you

  • Natural materials cannot be "standardized" like mass-produced items

  • Personalized items cannot be resold

  • We cannot verify the condition of used items

Exceptions: When We Will Help

While we cannot accept returns, we absolutely want to make things right if you receive an item that is:

  • Damaged during shipping (torn, broken, severely crushed)

  • Significantly defective due to craftsmanship error (seams coming apart, straps detaching, non-functional closures)

  • Wrong item sent (you ordered blue but received red, wrong size sent)

  • Missing components (missing refills, accessories that should be included)

How to Report an Issue

If you believe your item qualifies for one of the exceptions above:

Contact us within 48 hours of delivery at:

You must include:

  1. Your order number

  2. Clear photos showing the issue:

    • Overall view of the item

    • Close-up of the specific problem

    • Photos of packaging if damaged in shipping

  3. Detailed description of the problem

Important timing: Issues must be reported within 48 hours of delivery. After this window, we cannot guarantee assistance as we cannot verify when or how damage may have occurred.

What Is NOT Covered

The following are not eligible for refund, replacement, or exchange:

❌ Natural leather characteristics (grain, color variations, minor marks)
❌ Normal sizing variations in handcrafted items (±2-3mm)
❌ Color differences from photos due to screen settings or lighting
❌ Changed mind or buyer's remorse
❌ Ordered wrong size (measure carefully before ordering!)
❌ Minor irregularities in hand-stitching or edges
❌ Leather darkening or developing patina with use
❌ Wear and tear from normal use
❌ Damage caused by misuse or improper care
❌ Issues reported after 48 hours

Our Resolution Process

If you report a qualifying issue within 48 hours:

  1. We review your photos and description

  2. We assess whether the issue qualifies under our policy

  3. If approved, we will:

    • Offer a replacement item when possible

    • Provide a partial refund in cases of minor defects you're willing to keep

    • Provide a full refund in rare cases of significant defects

  4. We'll communicate our decision within 3-5 business days

We try to be fair and reasonable. Every situation is evaluated individually.

Cancellations

You may cancel your order before it ships for a full refund. Once an order has shipped, it cannot be cancelled.

To cancel:

  • Email thewrittenhaus@gmail.com with your order number

  • Subject line: "Cancel Order - [Order Number]"

  • We will confirm cancellation within 24 hours if the order hasn't shipped

Personalized/custom orders cannot be cancelled once production has begun.

Personalized Items

Custom or personalized items (embossing, engraving, custom sizing) are final sale and cannot be returned or refunded unless there was an error in the personalization on our part (we engraved the wrong name, wrong text, etc.).

Before ordering personalized items:

  • Double-check all spelling, names, and text

  • Verify sizing and specifications

  • Review design proofs if provided

Exchanges

We do not offer exchanges. If you need a different size or color and your order has already shipped, you would need to:

  1. Place a new order for the item you want

  2. Report an issue with the original item only if it qualifies under our exceptions policy

Refund Processing

If a refund is approved:

  • Refunds are issued to the original payment method

  • Processing takes 5-10 business days after approval

  • Shipping costs are non-refundable except in cases of our error

  • You may be asked to return the item (we'll provide a prepaid return label)

Store Credit

In some cases, we may offer store credit as an alternative to refunds. Store credit:

  • Never expires

  • Can be used on any future purchase

  • Will be issued as a unique code

Damaged in Shipping

For items damaged during shipping:

  1. Keep all packaging materials

  2. Take photos immediately

  3. Contact us within 48 hours

  4. We'll file a claim with the carrier

  5. We'll send a replacement or issue a refund once the claim is processed

You will not be responsible for shipping damage.

Wrong Item Received

If we ship the wrong item:

  1. Contact us within 48 hours with photos

  2. We'll arrange for the item to be returned (prepaid label)

  3. We'll ship the correct item or issue a full refund

  4. No cost to you

Quality Commitment

We inspect every item before shipping. However, if you receive an item with a genuine craftsmanship defect (not natural leather variation), we will make it right.

Our goal is your satisfaction while respecting the authentic, handmade nature of our products.

  • Understand that handcrafted items have natural variations

  • Look at product photos knowing yours will be unique

  • Contact us with questions BEFORE ordering
